Jeep Boy's Bike (12-Inch, Orange/Black) Review

We've had this bike for four months. It is a heavy-duty bike and overall is a good product. It is not ideal for us, though. Most of all, we wanted a very small bike with a seat that would go really low, for our young son. We thought a bike with 12" wheels would accomplish this, but when this one arrived, we realized the seat doesn't go any lower than a bike we already had with 16" wheels. We have 3 sons, all who have learned to ride without training wheels by age 5 (one learned at age 2 1/2). For this, you need a bike with a very low seat, so they feel safe and can start and stop themselves. (We started them on a balance bike, before going to a pedal bike.) We have since bought another bike (Trek Jet 12) with 12" wheels to replace the Jeep, and the seat goes a few inches lower on the Trek. The Trek bike was twice the cost, so the Jeep bike is probably a good value. However, the Trek is superior. Most notably, the Jeep bike is extremely heavy. The Trek bike is heavy, too. But the Jeep one is much more so, and very difficult for our sons to pick-up and keep from tipping. They really struggle with it. The position of the seat to the pedals also seems to be oriented better on the Trek. We can tell that our sons have an easier time peddling the Trek than the Jeep. The Jeep also has NO reflectors (which every bike should have) and no pads (which are good to have in places where the kid can get hurt -- center bar and handle bar axis). The Jeep bike does not have a kick-stand (neither did the Trek). This is kind of annoying because it means the bike just gets thrown down all the time. Kickstands are cheap, though, and we've put one on both, now. The Jeep does come with a hand brake, which we didn't install, only because our sons are really small and don't need to learn this, yet, until their ready to advance to a bigger bike with handbrakes. We will keep the Jeep bike and use it as a back-up and for visitors. I should add ... that our boys like the Jeep bike ... and ride it happily, especially now that they're all strong riders.
