My first impression of this Thermarest air mattress was 'Whoa, this thing is cushy!" and that was even before sleeping on it. Appropriately named 'Basecamp' this mattress isn't likely going to be included on long-haul backpacking trips where weight is a serious consideration. Not that it is incredibly heavy, mind you, but it is considerably heavier than a Pro Lite or Neoair, and the dimensions are larger, too. This review is specifically for the large version of this model, measuring approx. 25" X 77" and has a rectangular shape. I mention shape specifically as some sleeping bags, such as my Big Agnes double-sleeper (15 degree) Big Agnes Cabin Creek 15 Degree Sleeping Bag rely on specifically-shaped pads, like the Thermarest prolite or pro plus Therm-a-Rest Men's ProLite Plus Mattress, to form the bottom insulation of the bag in addition to providing cusion. Larger mattresses like this base camp will not fit.

On to my experience:

Pros:

* Comfort - I'm old enough to know how spoiled we've become when it comes to backpacking sleeping pads. Anyone remember when an ensolite pad was the pinnacle of sleeping comfort in the back country? It's no exaggeration to tell you that I've slept on many full-size spring mattresses less comfortable than this air mattress. This is one cushy, comfortable pad. Bears and nightime noises notwithstanding, I slept soundly on this pad over solid granite. Top scores in comfort here.

* Reliable - This is also huge: If your air mattress develops a leak at night or tears easily, it's about as useful to sleep on as a plastic hefty bag. I've never had a Thermarest fail on me, ever. They are built tough, hold their air, and have high quality, air tight valves. This base camp version has proven to be every bit as reliable as any Thermarest I've ever had. Both top and bottom are made of a heavier, canvas-like material than their lighter weight backpacking cousins. Over time, the fabric has worn well and has resisted cuts and abrasions.

* Sizing - For what this is intended for, base camps, car camping, and site that are relatively accessible by vehicle, burro, or horse, these are light and pack down small. I'd call them too large and heavy for backpacking, but I suppose it's possible if you're willing to haul the extra weight and bulk with you.

* Made in the USA - Hey, that's almost a novelty these days. slinky's are still made in the USA, too, in case you were wondering This means they cost a few bucks more than knock-off versions (see below) but I'm happy to pay the difference in this case.

Cons:

* Price - This is the only thing I can think of as a possible drawback - these are expensive. You get what you pay for in this case, and these represent solid value based on performance and durability, in my opinion. There are now knock off versions available from other manufacturers, and they are less expensive due, primarily, because they are made overseas. When it comes to a comfortable night's sleep when camping, I'll invest the extra few bucks to know I can rely on this pad, year after year.

Other thoughts:

As mentioned, this sleeping pad is best suited for car camping, or establishing a longer-term basecamp due to its size and weight. It's still a whole lot smaller and more compact than full-size air mattresses or sleeping cots, however, and that'll save significant space in the trunk of your car. or the back of your mule, depending It is, however, significantly thicker and more spacious than most backpacking pads, with a corresponding increase in both comfort and insulation qualities. Given that my family situation has me car-camping more and backpacking less these days, I'll be getting plenty of use out of this pad. Good thing, too, because my aging hips and knees cannot believe how much more comfortable this pad is than ones I've used in the past.

If comfort trumps space and weight considerations on your next camping trip, don't overlook this pad. Easily five stars, for a relatively ache-free sleeping experience while enjoying the great outdoors.
