WORX WG300 14-Inch 3 HP 14 Amp Electric Chain Saw Review

Due to a recent storm, I was in the market for a chain saw to get rid of some downed trees. I have three battery powered chain saws from Black & Decker (the hand-held, the pole version, and the Alligator) that have proven to be very, very handy in pruning limbs. But, while they are great for limbs up to 4 inches in diameter, and can be pressed into action for 6 to 7 inch limbs, they throw in the towel when it comes to a 12+ inch tree.

So the search started. I wanted to stay with an electric model since I use it so infrequently. Read some great reviews for the Poulan Pro400E, but it has an 18 inch bar that seemed to be is overkill for what I need. Plus, the user's manual stated that they don't recommend longer than a 50 foot extension, even in 12 gauge. But, I liked the fact that it had an inertial blade brake - kickback can be a real pain (both figuratively and literally).

Looked at several 14 and 16 inch models, but none of them had a blade brake system, which I really wanted. Saw this model and gave it a shot. Very pleased so far.

I very much like how user-friendly it is for people like me who are not frequent chain saw users. The automatic chain tensioning system is great - very easy to use, and it makes it impossible to over tighten the chain. Also like the fact that it has spikes (dogs) that help steady the saw against the tree. I was unable to find that feature on any other saw in this price range. Add in the blade brake and the automatic oiling systems, and I was pretty impressed with the features. Comes with a plastic sheath for the bar and a small bottle of oil (100ml, which is about 3.5 ounces).

I debated long and hard between the 14 and 16 inch models, and went with the 14 mainly since I value maneuverability over power/size given my main uses for the saw. The motor on the 14 inch is less powerful than the one on the 16 inch, and the chain speed is also slower. But speed of cut is not horribly important to me, and the lower power motor allows you to use a longer extension cord (100 ft) without any problems.

Worx also makes an 18 inch model, but it appears that's not available on Amazon. You can order that right from their website if you want it. Same features as the 14 and 16 inch, but with a larger motor. Key specs for each are listed at the end of the review. (Note - the U.S. website does not have the user's guide online, but you can find it if you go to the international page, and then click on either Canada or the UK).

Performance has been great. No problems getting through downed pine trees. I'm sure a gas powered saw, or a beefier electric would make the cuts faster, but I was pleased and impressed with how it made it through some pretty stout trunk sections, and zipped effortlessly through smaller limbs.

The warranty is two years. The manual states the product is "designed in Italy and made in China."

If you are very comfortable using a chainsaw you may want to go with a Poulan Pro 400E. Not as "friendly" to use, but very capable and more powerful. Or, if you plan on using the saw a lot, there are some excellent commercial-grade electric models from Makita, Stihl and Husquavarna at substantially higher prices. But for the occasional homeowner use, the Worx models offer a lot of convenience features for a good price. Highly recommend!
