Schwinn 12-Inch Balance Bike, Pink Review

We bought this bike for my middle girl's third birthday. I really wish the description had included the minimum height/inseam the child needs to be in order to use this product. She's quite petite for her age (35" and 24 pounds), but I thought this would be small enough. However, it's not. :( Poor kiddo can't ride it. Even with the seat on the lowest setting, her little toes hang just an inch short of the ground. If we put her boots on her, she can just reach, but not well enough to really enjoy the ride.

My oldest loves it, though, and she'll be six in December (She is also petite. I would not expect this bike to be large enough for your average 5.5 yo). She spends more time on this balance bike than she does on the "big girl" bike (with training wheels) that she got for Christmas last year. The balance bike has given her more control and confidence than her "real" bike does. Even balancing on her scooter is easier for her, now.

The bike is also very well-made. It did have a two scratches when I un-packed it, one of which goes all the way down to the metal. The seat is a nice, standard bicycle seat (none of that cheapo foamy stuff), and the steel frame has good welds and seems very sturdy. I found a basket to fit on it, but the holes in the handlebars don't actually go all the way through the rubber grip so you can't attach streamers or anything like that. I like that it has air-filled tires. They truly make for a smoother ride and I think they will last longer on our gravel roads than a solid, foam-rubber tire would. They seem to lose their pressure quickly, but that could simply be caused by the crazy weather we've been having.

Overall, It seems to be a nice bike and worth the money (Although, I really wish I could find some touch-up paint for that deep scratch.). I'm sure my daughter will love it once she's actually big enough to use it.
