What some reviewers consider problems, I see as assets. First, what could be more convenient than USB charging? I wish everybody went to USB. I have so many damn chargers sitting around already. My light is sitting on my laptop charging right now so it will be ready to go for another week or more when I head home tonight. Second, removing the light is not particularly easy, but I don't think that's an issue either. Just follow the directions and it becomes clear how to do it. Once you know how, it pops right out. Third, one reviewer said the light seems cheap and plastic. Really? It's case is cast metal, and it certainly seems up to Light & Motion's general high standards. That's one reason I was willing to spend the money on this light. I have had other LIght & Motion products for many years and their customer service has been exemplary. My one criticism is the rubber band mounting method. I realize that it uses rubber similar to my iPhone cover and is therefore very tough, but it can be removed in an instant. I would prefer a more secure mount, such as one that requires tools to install and remove. I could then probably leave the light on my commuter bike all the time, except for charging, because the causal thief wouldn't know how to get it off without tools. I have replaced bolts with tamper-resistant bolts on my commuter bike, and I could probably do the same for this light.
As for light output, I was using two Planet Bike Super Flashes, and the Vis 180 simply, without question, blew them away. I tested them side by side, and the Super Flash literally disappeared in the Vis 180's glow. The light output is shockingly bright. No one can claim they didn't see you, unless they were blinded by your light!
The Vis 180 should last for a long time, which Light & Motion strives to do since they care about sustainabllity, including not having to use replacement batteries. Over the course of the light's life, it will not generate any solid waste other than the packaging that can go into the paper recycling bin. You also get a power level gauge, which is something you rarely see on cheaper lights.
The bottom line is that this is an excellent tail light for people who regularly commute by bike and can therefore justify the cost. It could literally save your life. This is definitely a case of getting what you pay for.
